The strange death of Lucas Renoud at the Hérisson waterfalls in the Jura Mountains
LUCAS RENOUD, DISAPPEARED JUNE 18, 2018. BODY FOUND JUNE 26, 2019. HÉRISSON WATERFALLS TRAIL (CASCADES DU HÉRISSON), LONS-LE-SAUNIER, JURA MOUNTAINS, FRANCE.
Hikers discovered a badly decomposed body on Wednesday, June 26, 2019, 100 feet from a trail near the Hérisson waterfalls (Cascades du Hérisson in French). The series of waterfalls is close to Lons-le-Saunier in the mountainous Jura region of France, near the border with Switzerland. After DNA testing, the body turned out to be 21-year-old Lucas Renoud.
He had vanished in the same area eight days earlier on Tuesday, June 18, during a short hike with friends and colleagues. He had walked ahead of the group on a popular, well-sign-posted trail, out of sight of the others, and was never seen alive again.
What happened to Lucas Renoud has puzzled investigators, and the family remains convinced that there has been an official cover-up after the case was abruptly closed in November 2019. The autopsy was inconclusive, with no trauma or drugs detected, and the death was put down to "natural causes".
